Sun., Sept. 21: We will depart this morning on a beautiful fall color trip to northeast Canada and US. We will make our necessary meal stops and then on to Escanaba, MI, for the night.
Mon., Sept. 22: As we leave this morning we will drive through the Hiawatha National Forest along Lake Michigan to the "City of Locks"-Sault Ste. Marie. Connected by bridges with its sister city in Ontario, this important passageway city offers an opportunity to view the Soo Locks and observe ships being raised and lowered to bypass St. Mary's Rapids. We will then go on to Sudbury, Ontario, for the night.
Tues., Sept. 23: Ottawa, ON, the capital of Canada, is our destination today. We arrive with time to enjoy a city tour in the afternoon. Ottawa was chosen to be the capital of the country because it was here the English and French culture came together. It is one of Canada's most beautiful cities. While on our tour we will see Parliament Hill, the Prime Minister's Residence, Rideau Canal and more.
Wed., Sept. 24: Today we will drive through the scenic Laurentian Highlands on our way to Montreal, an important trading center for over 300 years. A local guide will provide a tour of the city including Old Notre Dame Cathedral, Shrine of St. Joseph, Olympic Park and the site of Expo '67.
Thurs., Sept. 25: The city of Quebec welcomes us today. Its old stone buildings, horse-drawn carriages, steep winding streets and ancient trees all add to its charm. Our first stop will be a visit to the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre. The first chapel was built here in 1658. After a stop at Montmorency Falls we will pick up our guide for a city tour to learn of the history of the city and see how it is divided into the Upper Town and Lower Town. We will see the Citadelle, the Old Walled City, Chateau Frontenac and the Plains of Abraham. You may choose to visit the famous Artists Alley and eat in Old Town in the evening.
Fri., Sept. 26: As we journey through the Province of Quebec, we will drive along the St. Lawrence River and then enter the Province of New Brunswick with dinner at Edmundston (on own). We will make a stop at the World's longest Covered Bridge in Hartland and spend the night in Fredericton, NB.
Sat., Sept. 27: A short ride will bring us to Saint John, located on the Bay of Fundy. St. John claims one of the finest and busiest harbors along the Atlantic seaboard. Here we will stop at the Reversing Falls Rapids, where the flow of the St. John River is dramatically reversed by the ocean tide. Our next stop will be Moncton with a visit to Magnetic Hill. We will then drive to Cape Tormentine, NB, where we take the 9-mile Bridge to Prince Edward Island, overnighting in Charlottetown-the provincial capitol.
Sun., Sept. 28: The smallest province, Prince Edward Island is also known as "the birthplace of Canada" because the Conference of Confederation was held here in 1864. A guide will join us this morning for an interesting tour of this charming island. We will stop at the humble cottage immortalized in the novel Anne of Green Gables. We will travel by ferry this afternoon from Prince Edward Island to Nova Scotia and then continue by motorcoach to Cape Breton Island with our lodging at Baddeck for the next two nights.
Mon., Sept. 29: Our first stop this morning will be at the Alexander Graham Bell Museum. We will view the Cape Breton Highlands today while on a 184-mile drive around Cape Breton Island on the Cabot Trail named for explorer John Cabot. After the tour we will return to Baddeck for the night.
Tues., Sept. 30: We will drive to Halifax today, whose history dates back to its founding in 1749. Halifax is the provincial capital of Nova Scotia and is a busy commercial center where much has been done to preserve the historic and natural heritage. We will spend some time sightseeing and this evening enjoy time in Peggy's Cove, NS, which is one of the most photographed and painted areas in all of North America. Peggy's Cove is a quaint and picturesque fishing village where lobster fishermen live and work. Enjoy an included lobster dinner here.
Wed., Oct. 1: Today we will follow the Evangeline Trail past the fertile farmlands of the Annapolis Valley. We will stop at Grand Pre National Park to learn of the deportation of the French Acadians, forever immortalized in Longfellow's "Evangeline." Here the early French settlers called "Acadians" made their home until they were expelled in 1775 for refusing to swear allegiance to England. We will continue on to Yarmouth where we will board the ferry for a ride across the Bay of Fundy to Bar Harbor, Maine, for the night, which was once an exclusive playground of American millionaires.
Thurs., Oct. 2: This morning we will sightsee in Acadia National Park and later, depart from Bar Harbor Then a beautiful drive awaits us as we head through Maine to Massachusetts, with a stop also being made at Kennebunkport, the summer home of former President Bush. Our lodging will be in Woburn, MA.
Fri., Oct. 3: We will go back in history today as a guide joins us for an interesting tour of Lexington, Concord and Historic Boston. We will see Battle Green where the Revolutionary War began. In Concord we will visit the Minuteman National Park commemorating the "shot heard 'round the world." This afternoon we will tour Boston along Freedom Trail where we will see the State House, "Old Ironsides" and the Old North Church. We will also spend some time at Quincy Market for shopping and lunch (on own). We will go on to Plymouth, MA, for the night.
Sat., Oct. 4: Today we will visit Plymouth, MA, and see the Plymouth Rock, a wax museum, the Mayflower II, Plimoth Plantation and more. In Bedford we will stop at the Whale Museum. Then on to the Seekonk, MA, area for the night.
Sun., Oct. 5: Today we will travel through Hartford, CT, on our way to our lodging for the night along I-80 in Du Bois, PA.
Mon., Oct. 6: Drive through countryside today seeing many Amish and Mennonite farms. This evening enjoy an included family Amish-style meal. Our overnight is in Shipshewana, IN.
Tues., Oct. 7: We will go on to Janesville, WI, with some sightseeing in Chicago along the way.
Wed., Oct. 8: Leave Madison, WI, for home after a beautiful tour filled with history and colorful scenery.
